Hi, After upgrading to 8.1 6213 I can no longer relay mail through gmail. This was working fine for years, until the upgrade. The error message I get is

Error: Unable to connect to remote SMTP server. Could not connect to SMTP host: smtp.gmail.com, port: 465, response: -1

Plus after about 10 minutes or so, the server quits. It's running on my qnap NAS and the logs are .....

So after reloading the server for the umtenth time, this time it has stayed up and is now receiving mail from others.

I removed the smart host (smtp.gmail.com) and can now send mail to other servers, but still can't send anything to gmail ... all messages to gmail just get queued - I don't see any failure messages for gmail in the logs

Ken,

Sorry to hear you're running into these problems. Hopefully, my response will help you troubleshoot.

I don't think either of these issues are related to upgrading Xeams. Just to recap, you're having two problems. Please correct me if I am wrong:

  1. Inability to send outbound emails to gmail.com
  2. Xeams shutdown

I'll answer #2 first. I see the following message in the log:

This line indicates something on the machine is sending a terminate signal to Xeams. I would recommend checking the logs files in /var/log folder to see what is doing this. Once you know what is sending the "Terminate" signal, you will be able to fix this problem.

Problem 1: Check SMTPOutboundConversation.log to see why is gmail.com not accepting your messages. As far as I know, public servers like Gmail and Microsoft has enabled several security measures to prevent users from misusing their services and often ask uses to create application specific passwords. The SMTPOutboundConversation.log should be able to tell you if the is the password that is getting rejected.

I would also recommend checking OutboundAuditTrailFailure.log.

So I had a smart host pointed to smtp.gmail.com on port 465 and everything was working, until a couple of days ago. The only thing that changed was the upgrade.

Ken,

Please send us the following two things via email.

  1. A screenshot of your Smart Host screen displaying the configuration
  2. Send a test message to someone on the Internet. It is very likely this email will get queued in Outbound Message Queue. Using Windows Explorer, go to C:\Xeams\OutboundMailQueue and send us the most recent message (which will be your test) you see in that folder.

Ken,

We sent a reply back to your email address on Feb 07 - did you not get that? Could you please check your junk folder in case it went there? In any case, I had two comments in my reply:

  1. We were not able to open the EML file you sent. For some reason, it had corrupted contents.
  2. I see you're using port 465, which is encrypted. Therefore, You need to check "Use SSL/TLS" in order for it to work. Try checking that box.

OK thanks, I had that checked before, but I was using the older queued messages to test it - i thought that when a new setting was applied that the outbound queue would use the new setting and not the old ..... So it is now working
